Massachusetts Consumers Can Secure Lower Electric Rates for Free

12-01-2010 09:38 AM CET | Energy & Environment

Press release from: Lower Electric Bill Today LLC

Lower Electric Bill Today, an online provider of electricity news, information, and statistics, announced today that Massachusetts consumers can reduce their electric expenses by up to 20% per year by transferring their service to an independent, low-cost electric supplier.

A government program known as electricity deregulation aims to lower electric rates throughout Massachusetts, a state known for having some of the most expensive electric rates in the nation. To achieve this goal, the state government deregulated the electric industry to allow independent, low-cost electric suppliers to sell cheaper electricity to MA consumers and business-owners. Currently the average Massachusetts residential electric rate is over 15 cents per kilowatt-hour; however, low-cost Massachusetts electric suppliers offer lower electric rates starting at 9 cents per kilowatt-hour.

Current customers of the state’s two major public utility companies -- National Grid Massachusetts and Western Massachusetts Electric Company (WMECO) -- can now transfer their service to a low-cost electric supplier for free at LowerElectricBillToday.com.

“Our goal is to educate Massachusetts consumers about electricity deregulation and to demonstrate just how simple it is to receive lower electric rates,” said Christina Cleri, president of Lower Electric Bill Today. “Our website provides a simple, user-friendly platform where consumers in deregulated territories can compare electric rates and switch their service to a low-cost supplier. Our mission is to simply help consumers pay less for electricity.”

The option to purchase cheaper electricity from a low-cost MA electric supplier comes at an opportune time, as residential and commercial electric rates throughout Massachusetts increase year after year.

“If the average residential electric bill in Massachusetts is now $150 per month, switching to a low-cost electric supplier can reduce that figure by up to 20% – or $30 – each month. That’s a significant savings,” Cleri added. “For Massachusetts business-owners, transferring to a more affordable supplier could potentially save thousands of dollars per year.”
