Washington, DC—”Eleven of the 13 candidates endorsed by The Hispanic Leadership Fund’s Political Action Committee won elections because of their commitments to empower Hispanics and all Americans,” says Mario H. Lopez, president of the Hispanic Leadership Fund.

While some commentators are praising President Obama for a ‘humble’ reaction to midterm elections, Lopez offers a different analysis:

“Sadly for him, President Obama is in a state of denial. The president continues to not hear the majority of Americans,” stresses Lopez. “President Obama’s cynical appeal telling Latino voters to oust their ‘enemies’ didn’t work. We know that his policies have caused unemployment 2% higher for Latinos than the population at large.

“The president said he was ‘sympathetic’ to voters who saw his government takeovers as a ‘potential overreach.’ Mr. President, please hear us loud and clear. The majority of voters didn’t reject a ‘potential’ overreach, we rejected real takeovers of businesses and ‘health care’—real penalties to business owners and individuals.

“In Florida, for example, the Hispanic Leadership Fund helped educate voters with a television spot (bit.ly/cbuWYs) about former Obama administration official Rep. Joe Garcia’s (D-FL) record. Before the Hispanic Leadership Fund’s spot began airing, polls showed a tight 1-point race between Garcia and his challenger, David Rivera (R-FL). In the end, we were excited to see David win by 9 points.”

“The Hispanic Leadership Fund congratulates Governors-elect Susana Martinez (R-NM) and Brian Sandoval (R-NV),” says Lopez. “Of course, we also congratulate Senator-elect Marco Rubio (R-FL), and are excited about the wins of Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (FL-R), Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL), Raul Labrador (R-ID), Steve Pearce (R-NM), Bill Flores (R-TX), Francisco Canseco (R-TX) and Jaime Hererra (R-WA).

“It has been a positive development for fellow Latinos who want to protect economic opportunity and a more responsible approach to government,” Lopez continues. “We were proud to endorse Hispanics across the country who share our free market and limited government principles. We had a great group of candidates this cycle.”

Lopez also commented on the future of the GOP, and the urgency of communicating a conservative message to Hispanics:

“The new crop of congressional leaders is a positive development, but there is still a ways to go. We saw again that candidates who took an antagonistic approach to Latinos—like Sharon Angle in Nevada—again drove voters away,” says Lopez.

“Republicans have a choice to make—do they want their House majority to last six years or 60 years? After all, dismal performance among Hispanic voters would almost certainly make their victory more short-lived than they want.”

Mario H. Lopez is a political strategist with over two decades of experience in politics and public policy. He serves as president of the Hispanic Leadership Fund, a non-partisan advocacy organization dedicated to promoting free enterprise, limited government, individual liberty, and traditional values. HLF’s Political Action Committee supports like-minded candidates for office. See more at http://hispanicleadershipfund.org.
