“Safe Routes to School” Funding Encourages Children to Walk and Bicycle to School

Safe Routes to School (SRTS) works to create safer routes for walking and bicycling to school. SRTS promotes increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, minimizing traffic congestion, helping the environment and building connections between families, schools and the community.

In 2005, Congress approved $612 million to establish Safe Routes to School (SRTS) funding in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Each State Department of Transportation (DOT) received a minimum of $1 million per fiscal year through 2009 for SRTS efforts. Congress extended the program to $183 million per year starting in 2010 until a long-term transportation reauthorization is complete.

Each state is required to allocate between 70-90% of the SRTS funds for infrastructure projects (sidewalks, bike lanes, trails, intersection improvements, etc.), and between 10-30% for non-infrastructure activities (programs that relate to education, encouragement and enforcement).
