World’s Longest Rail Tunnel Victory: Gotthard Base Tunnel

10-22-2010 07:38 AM CET | Logistics & Transport

Press release from: Dreamscape Design

The 57 km-long Gotthard base tunnel, first suggested in 1947 by Basel engineer Carl Eduard Gruner, finally broke through at 2:20pm local time on 15th October 2010.

The Gotthard rail link will reduce the travel time between Milan and Zurich by 1.5 hours and has displaced the Seikan tunnel in Japan as the world's longest rail tunnel.

This breakthrough has also proved to be a triumph for the four Herrenknecht gripper TBMs that have successfully completed 85 km of the total 114 km of running tunnels. Breakthrough in the western tube is now expected in spring, 2011.

The route over the Gotthard Pass is one of the vital passages through the Alps on the north-south axis in Europe. The traffic on this route has increased dramatically since 1980 and the existing road and rail tunnels have been struggling to cope with the volume of traffic for years.

Once the work has been completd, passenger trains will be able to travel up to an impressive 155.3 mph through the new tunnels, allowing trans-alpine train commuters to save 50 minutes in travel time and by one hour once the adjacent Zimmerberg and Ceneri Base Tunnels are also completed.

The tunnel is expected to open in 2017.
