Green IT in focus: BiblioProducts display their environmental conscience
Bibliotheca’s endeavor to present an environmentally compatible and resource-saving product portfolio has many facets: already in the development and production stages, care is taken to ensure that processes are environmentally friendly and energy efficient. Pollution-free materials facilitate ecological recycling. And naturally, the products themselves can be used in an environmentally aware and energy-saving manner in the library. The latest development concerns the SelfCheck facilities in particular: Shut-Down and Wake-Up, two new BiblioCockpit functions, lay the foundations for the low-energy operation of the SelfCheck machines. In the future it will be possible to turn the stations on and off automatically via LAN, either manually from the central Cockpit server or on the basis of a scheduled task. When this timer feature is used, the SelfCheck automatically goes into power-save mode for an individually set length of time and switches itself on again afterwards. But quite unlike the conventional sleep mode, it’s not just the SelfCheck’s PC that hibernates; all peripheral devices, such as the reader, the printer and the height adjustability motor, are completely switched off as well. Only when they are switched off for certain periods like this are noticeable energy savings achieved.
Other plus points are the efficient management of the whole RFID system with the BiblioCockpit, which dispenses with the need for library staff to switch the individual machines on and off manually. And a monitoring function makes absolutely sure that all devices really are switched on or off.
Efforts to go paperless are universally familiar. With the BiblioProducts, receipts specifying the current media status or the fees paid can be issued by text message or e-mail too.
An energy-conscious approach to media security is possible too: an energy-reducing standby mode can be configured on the new BiblioGate VII, whereby the antennae are only activated when a library patron nears the gate.
Bibliotheca’s motive is clear: only sustainable and smart RFID components have a future.
In 2002, Bibliotheca RFID Library Systems was a pioneer in providing the first RFID systems to libraries. Now, with global headquarters in Switzerland and operations in the Americas, Australia, Germany, Italy, Denmark and the UK, Bibliotheca is the second largest global provider of RFID solutions. The BiblioChip® RFID System complies with the latest ISO standards as a non-proprietary and customer-specific integrated solution. More than 1,000 international libraries are using the BiblioChip RFID System. Bibliotheca won the Swiss Technology Award in 2005 and the Zug Innovation Prize in 2004. www.bibliotheca-rfid.com
