The extreme sportsman Christian Flühr

The extreme sportsman Christian Flühr

He was born and raised in Oberhausen, right in the middle of the Ruhr. It is there, among the coal mines, that 34-year-old Christian Flühr has got his roots. But in contrast to the preferences of countless football fans in the region, there is only one thing that Flühr ever wanted to do: skiing. Nowadays, the Bavarian by choice still enjoys spending every single minute of his free time on the piste. He even intends to ski for as many as 14,400 minutes nonstop in the 'Europa-Sportregion Zell am See-Kaprun'!

By now, this is Flühr's seventh attempt at reaching the absolute best. On the last occasion, in 2005, he came out on top against the Austrian athlete Thomas Seiwald by spending a total of 222 hours and 22 minutes on his skis. On 24th January the extreme sportsman is starting his very final attempt, his farewell tour. This time the skiing marathon is to last for 240 hours - a record for eternity?

The German athlete has chosen the pistes of Schmittenhöhe as a venue for this mammoth enterprise. Thanks to its first-rate infrastructure and its very good piste conditions, the local mountain of the 'Europa-Sportregion' is the ideal spot for this record attempt, for which the sportsman has been preparing intensively for weeks. 'You cannot do something like that without having meticulously prepared for it. After all, it means a bit more than just going skiing', Flühr says and smiles.

But this ten-day ordeal is a real challenge not just for the skier: the employees of Schmittenhöhebahn AG, the local lift and cable car company, will have to do their very best to ensure that the attempt goes off without a hitch. 'Our entire team is very much looking forward to the event and a new record by Christina Flühr', says Hans Wallner, the technical director of the company.

Flühr will take hardly any breaks during his ten-day nonstop skiing enterprise. He is only allowed five minutes an hour to satisfy the most urgent human needs such as sleep or hunger. According to the rules of the Guinness Book of Records he may save up these resting periods, but he must always be back on the piste again right on time.

This unusual adventure will surely attract many, many fans and onlookers to the pistes. They will want to watch live whether the marathon world champion of skiing sets the seventh record in a row. The people of the 'Europa-Sportregion Zell am See-Kaprun' are already keeping their fingers crossed for him...

General Information:
With its 14,000 beds and two million overnight stays a year, the 'Europa-Sportregion Zell am See-Kaprun' is one of the most important holiday regions in Austria. More than 40 activities like rafting, golf, and walking are offered during the summer months. In the cold season of the year rides in horse-drawn sleighs or snowshoe walks provide a welcome change. 56 chair lifts and cable cars take skiers to thick powder snow on 132 kilometres of pistes - snowboarders find an ideal terrain at the Snowpark on the glacier plateau of Kitzsteinhorn, 2,600 metres above sea-level. Here, skiing and snowboarding is possible even in summer. Moreover, the renowned German publishing house of 'Falk Verlag' has named Zell am See and Kaprun as the most family-friendly holiday region in Europe.

Christian Flühr (cf-1.net) achieved his 12th world record on skis last week. At Hocheck in Oberaudorf and Unterberghorn in Kössen he managed to ski a total altitude of 53.577 m in 24 hours.
