PeopleChecking Comment On Nacro's Recent Survey Findings
United Kingdom (October 01, 2010) – PeopleChecking, a service dedicated to offering employee background checks and employment screening services, comment on the findings of Nacro’s survey outlining the disclosure of embarrassing details to employers. In the survey, Nacro found that three out of five people in the UK believe that having a criminal record would be “the most embarrassing thing” to tell their employers; with disclosing mental health problems and declaring bankruptcy following closely behind.
Jackie Lowthian, Policy Director at Nacro, has commented that these findings are “not surprising”, as “people who have a record are aware that their past will count against them in the job market” and thus dramatically affect the likelihood of them securing the job position they want. She believes that “work is the most effective way of preventing offending,” and in response to the findings, has assisted the launch of Nacro’s Change the Record Campaign to reform the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act.
“The belief of Nacro’s Chief Executive, Paul McDowell, is that the current law is outdated and doesn’t afford people the opportunity to move on from their past,” commented Mathew Armstrong, Head of Business Development at PeopleChecking. “The team here at PeopleChecking wholeheartedly agree that it should not be made so difficult for ex-offenders to find work, and that the current laws in place are actually deterring the government from creating the equal society they are so determined to form. Add to this the fact that almost a quarter of the adult population has a criminal record, and it is plain to see that this is an issue that cannot be ignored any longer. For any employers interested in looking into this matter further regarding the current legislation, and what a reform of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act could mean for their future recruitment procedures, we can provide them with expert advice and criminal background checks.”
