Don’t tar all cosmetic surgery clinics with the same brush

The National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death (NCEPO) has

released a damning report on British cosmetic surgery clinics, which states that 4 out

of 5 cosmetic surgery clinics are ‘inadequate’. But not all surgeries are the same,

declares Mr Adrian Richards of Aurora Clinics, a highly regarded plastic surgeon

based in Buckinghamshire and with clinics in Harley Street and Northampton.

The report highlights that a large percentage of patients are inadequately assessed

prior to surgery, are not offered a ‘cooling off period’ and receive little or no follow-up

care. Many surgeons carrying out the operations do not perform enough procedures

to develop and maintain the complex skills needed, and their theatres are poorly

equipped. The trouble with the report is that it fails to recognise the excellent work

being carried out by reputable cosmetic clinics. Mr Richards, is himself a Consultant

Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon who carries out over 500 procedures a year and he

operates from within the BMI group of Hospitals, who are the largest provider of

healthcare in the UK. His care and consideration to his patients before during and

after surgery is widely recognised as exemplary.

Despite being concerned that all plastic surgeons will be tarred with the same

brush, Mr Richards welcomes the report as he hopes it will prompt action. As he

explains, “Experienced plastic surgeons welcome the call for more legislation and

control. This allows patients to be sure they’re being treated by a reputable surgeon

and ensures ‘cowboys’ are taken out of the market”.
