"Southside Johnny" returns with new album

Press release from: Press office Brigitte Rotter

Bruce Springsteen was inspired by him, Jon Bon Jovi acknowledged him as his "reason for singing" and Little Steven van Zandt founded with him the probably best "bar band in the world": the talk is about John Lyon aka "Southside Johnny“. For more than three decades he and his "Asbury Jukes" are considered to be the secret weapon of New Jersey in the matter of Rock 'n' Roll and Rhythm & Blues.

Now there are news from the "Grand Old Master" from the Jersey shore. After a musical excursion to the songs of Tom Waits with "Grapefruit Moon", Southside Johnny and his Asbury Jukes are back to pure Rock ‘n’ Roll with their recent album “Pills and Ammo”, which is definitely one of the best records the band has ever made: a giddying, irresistible, full-steam-ahead-and-damn-the-torpedoes Rock 'n' Roll in the tradition of the early Rolling Stones. While still tinged with the exuberant rhythm and blues feeling that is the Jukes’ trademark, and loaded with the driving sound of the legendary Jukes horn section, this new album has a sharper, guitar-oriented, rock and roll feel to it. Tunes like "Umbrella in My Drink" with guest vocals by Gary U.S. Bonds, "Keep on Movin’" à la Jerry Lee Lewis and "One More Night to Rock" are examples par excellence and place the band in their classic, jubilant "let’s play all night long" mood. So Southside and the Jukes rip through the 12 numbers of this album with fierce energy - and the band has never sounded better than today. On October 16, 2010, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes will come to Germany for a show at the Honerkamps Ballsaal in Melle.

Southside Johnny (born John Lyon, * December 4, 1948, in Neptune, New Jersey) is an American singer-songwriter and head of the band "The Asbury Jukes". He is a longtime fellow of Bruce Springsteen and his first albums featured various songs written by Springsteen. Until today Southside and Springsteen occasionally join the stage together. Once a year Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes give an exclusive concert in Germany (Melle near Osnabrück). The band have the reputation of being "the best bar band in the world".
