Visibility field analysis on commercial vehicles – does only the standard count?
Virtual Reality (VR) is becoming more and more important in business processes and, originally coming from the games industry, has developed into a tool used more and more in the manufacturing industry. Head-mounted displays (HMD's) enable companies to implement cost-effective virtual reality solutions. The potential of this technology has also long been recognized in the vehicle and machine manufacturing industry, where virtual reality is increasingly being used to support construction, design reviews and product presentations.
But also safety-relevant aspects can be evaluated already during the product development process by means of VR. For example, in the development of commercial vehicles - as of earth-moving machinery, agricultural machinery, industrial trucks, etc. - the future driver's view of his working environment plays an important role in order to avoid accidents during subsequent operation of the vehicle.
For visibility field analysis - depending on industry and vehicle type - different standards exist for the evaluation of the direct and indirect field of vision (indirect = means visual aids, e.g. mirrors, camera-monitor systems, etc.). Software solutions such as EMM-Check® from REKNOW GmbH & Co. KG from Hamburg, have in the past shifted these very complex analyses of the physical prototype into the early phases of product development - design and construction. But does a positive result of a visibility field analysis according to a standard also ensure an optimal field of vision for the vehicle driver?
This is where VR technologies come into their own, and the designer becomes the driver of his vehicle! Equipped with an HMD, he takes a seat in the virtual vehicle and now also evaluates the subjective aspects of the view from the cabin.
EMM-Check® combines in a unique way the objective field of view analysis according to national and international standards with the subjective evaluation of the driver’s view based on modern VR technologies. If the user of an HMD (e.g. the HTC Vive®) is alone in his virtual world in many VR applications, the VR-Cluster by REKNOW in EMM-Check® enables the experience of Virtual Reality in a team! With several HMDs at one location or distributed worldwide and connected through the internet, design reviews and product presentations with several participants can be carried out with a minimum of the usual costs.
In predefined, adaptable VR scenarios, your own products can be presented even more impressively in a realistic environment. These can be quickly selected from a library of typical scenarios and objects such as people, construction sites, roads, shelves, pallets, etc., and set up.
Today, EMM-Check® is the world's leading software for normative visibility field analysis and subjective visual assessment and is used by all well-known manufacturers in the above-mentioned industries.
The REKNOW GmbH & Co. KG is an international company based in the City of Hamburg/Germany.
REKNOW develops and distributes EMM-Check®, the leading software for visibility field analysis of virtual commercial vehicles. In addition, the company supports well-known customers in the manufacturing industry for product lifecycle management applications (PLM). Consulting and training services in the PLM environment are part of REKNOW's portfolio as well as the development of complementary software for the CAD system CATIA V5 and web-based applications.
