Critically Acclaimed Percussionist David Pleasant Leading Unique Program in Highlands, NC

With the trend of cutting performing arts programs in schools on the rise, David Pleasant makes it his mission to educate while performing. His passion coupled with The Mountain Retreat & Learning Center’s dedication to providing meaningful intergenerational programming has resulted in a unique performing arts workshop for all ages and skill levels called “Shout, Juba & Jive! Intergenerational Poly-rhythmic Explorations.” The workshop will take place at The Mountain Retreat & Learning Center in Highlands, NC July 16-18.

Inspired by the traditions of the Gullah-Geechee culture of the Sea Islands, David Pleasant supplies teachers, musicians, students and the general public a way to learn about early African American history through rhythm-effect vocals and drum voice techniques. He has been featured on PBS, MTV, Nickelodeon, Reading Rainbow, the Brooklyn Children’s Museum, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and many others around the world.

“David is an innovative, talented master percussionist and teacher. He engages people of all ages in the poly-rhythmic music and movement that Bessie Jones called ‘Drumfolk.’ The Mountain is absolutely thrilled to be bringing him to the Western North Carolina area,” said Alisa Pykett, Director of Programs at The Mountain. In addition to the “Shout, Juba & Jive” intergenerational program, an adult program for all skill levels called “Language of the Soul” will take place at The Mountain July 19-22.
