Hannover, 15 June 2010. John Storgårds, Chief Conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, makes his debut with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra on 24th June, stepping in for an indisposed Mariss Jansons. On the programme in Munich´s Herkulessaal is Schumann´s “Spring Symphony“, Stravinsky´s Violin Concerto D major op. 61, with soloist Gil Shaham, and de Falla´s ”The Three-Cornered Hat“. The concert is repeated on 25th June and will be broadcast live at 7pm (GMT) on BR Klassik radio.

“It is with great inspiration and excitement that I am looking forward to performing, at short notice, a wonderfully challenging programme in Munich, with the fantastic Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra”, states Storgårds. “I am also very happy to have the pleasure of conducting the same orchestra at the Bad Kissingen festival on 3rd July.”

From 19 until 31 October, the Finnish conductor and the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra embark on a major tour of Germany with eleven concerts. In Nuremberg, Stuttgart, Freiburg, Tuttlingen, Friedrichshafen, Frankfurt, Hannover, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Bielefeld and Dortmund audiences can look forward to Bruckner’s Symphony No 7, Sibelius’s Symphony No 5 and Beethoven’s Symphony No 5. The tour´s soloists will be the cellist Sol Gabetta and the violinist Julian Rachlin.

To coincide with the tour, John Storgårds and the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra release a new disc in September on the label ONDINE. Together with violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann, they have recorded Sibelius´ Violin Concerto D minor op. 47, “The Wood Nymph” op. 15 and “The Bard“. Storgårds´ discography currently encompasses more than 30 recordings. The most recent disc of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and its Chief Conductor was released in February 2010, also with ONDINE, and features works by Uuno Klami

In October, Storgårds returns to the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and makes his debut in the Concertgebouw. In November he conducts the NDR Sinfonieorchester Hamburg for the first time, featuring violinist Christian Tetzlaff.

The 46-year-old Finn has been at the helm of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra since September 2007. Additionally, he is the Artistic Director of the Lapland Chamber Orchestra. He was Chief Conductor of Tampere Philharmonic until spring 2009. In addition to his work as a conductor, Storgårds also remains active as a solo violinist.
