BiOpiniO Systems Biology develops iTMs, proprietary mathematical knowledge of biological functions

12-06-2006 02:16 PM CET | Science & Education

Press release from: BiOpiniO

(Recklinghausen 06.12.2006) BiOpiniO Systems Biology develops iTMs (“items”), a full-manually annotated proprietary collection for functional and disease-centered networks.

“We started to analyze biological networks with mathematical desriptions and were very surprised to find some mathematical fingerprints for distinct biological functions. Cellular functions are too complex as that they can be reduced to a simple formula, but in some cases it is quite amazing that the premises for specific biological needs are describable and thus predictable. We analyzed these interrelationships with the available knowledge coming from renowned databases. It is astonishing that any biological function has a consensus “formula” which is overlayed with its own architecture.
We are convinced that it is worthwhile to further research on the mathematical constraints of biological functions and signal propagation. Regarding the wealth of information published daily in PubMed, systems biological approaches like this are a great support for any scientist in the field of target dicovery or related topics.
Any mathematical prediction is manually validated using the growing literature body and vice versa new findings are immediately modelled to understand the whole. As other companies do not try to integrate deep biological understanding with expert knowledge from graph theory, we are convinced that BiOpiniO will get a lead role in this innovative and competitive field.“
Thomas Wiebringhaus, BiOpiniO Systems Biology

To date, iTMs are developed for more than 25 import biological mechanisms and more than 10 neurodegenerative and autoimmune diseases, the iTMs collection is expected to comprise more than 100 networks in the near future.
