Press release from: Thieme Publishers

New York/Stuttgart – Thieme Publishing Group is pleased to announce that Professor Phil S. Baran of the Scripps Research Institute in California has won the Thieme-IUPAC Prize 2010. Presented every two years, this award is given to a scientist under the age of 40 whose research has had a major impact on the field of synthetic organic chemistry. The Thieme-IUPAC Prize is jointly administered by Thieme Chemistry and the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC).

Phil Baran is the 10th recipient of this prestigious award. His research primarily focuses on the total synthesis of natural products and is characterized by highly efficient and imaginative routes to form complex molecular architectures with minimal use of protecting groups. Baran’s successes in his chosen field are extraordinary for a scientist still in the early stages of his independent research career and have been documented in an impressive list of peer-reviewed publications.

The chairman of the 2010 prize selection committee was Professor Victor Snieckus, Queen’s University Bader Chair in Organic Chemistry, and a member of the SYNFACTS and SYNLETT Editorial Boards at Thieme. He says,“As now predicted from previous competitions, the selection committee was challenged by a superb slate of nominees, however, in contrast to previous years, there was an exciting razor-edge finish from which we could proclaim Phil Baran as the decisive winner. Phil’s total synthesis work is highlighted by bold steps that many of us would have feared to take, or even to consider in group meetings. He is also one of a select group of young organic chemists today telling us to modify the traditional thinking that protecting groups are a necessity and an expediency. This is a most timely award since Phil is a superb troubadour for the field of organic synthesis today.”

Guido F. Herrmann, Managing Director of Thieme Chemistry states “In 1992, Thieme and the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry awarded the Thieme-IUPAC Prize in Synthetic Organic Chemistry for the first time. Thieme is grateful for the close cooperation over many years with IUPAC, the selection committees, and the organizers of the International Conference on Organic Synthesis, and I would like to express my special thanks to Professor Victor Snieckus, the chairman of the selection committee. My congratulations go to Professor Phil S. Baran, the recipient of the 2010 prize, and we look forward to a stimulating ICOS conference in August in Bergen.”

About the Thieme IUPAC Prize

The Thieme-IUPAC Prize is award on the basis of scientific merit for independent research dealing with synthesis in the broadest context of organic chemistry, including organometallic chemistry, medicinal and biological chemistry, designed molecules, and materials. It is presented during the International Conference on Organic Synthesis sponsored by the International Union Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC–ICOS). This year's conference, ICOS-18, will be held on August 1 - 6, 2010 in Bergen, Norway. For more information about the Thieme-IUPAC Prize please visit thieme-chemistry.com/iupac.
