Stores Pull Bottles From Shelves After Acetaminophen Recall Announcement
Eleven million bottles of generic-brand acetaminophen made by Michigan-based drug manufacturer the Perrigo Company were recalled on Nov. 9. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) informed the public to the recall, which is for 383 lots of 500-milligram acetaminophen caplets that were manufactured and distributed under generic or store brands sold at retailers like Walgreens, CVS and Wal-Mart.Bottles included in the acetaminophen recall contained small metal bits and fragments — an estimated 11 million bottles are affected. The FDA noted that the chance of the acetaminophen causing serious health consequences is small, though consumers should still take caution — anyone who swallows an affected pill could suffer stomach discomfort and cuts to the mouth and throat. If you have ingested one of the caplets included in the acetaminophen recall and believe you are in danger, do not hesitate to call a doctor. Those consumers who are wondering whether they are possession of the recalled acetaminophen can find out by locating the batch number printed on the container label and checking at the FDA’s list of acetaminophen recall at www.fda.gov/oc/po/firmrecalls/perrigo/perrigobatchlist.html. When the FDA announced the recall on Nov. 9, there were no immediate reports of illness or injuries.
Most commonly known as the drug in products sold under the brand name Tylenol, acetaminophen is taken to treat minor aches and pains, including headaches, backaches and arthritis pain. The recall does not include any Tylenol products. Despite the recall, the FDA stresses that the public should not worry about there being an acetaminophen shortage. The nonprescription drug will still be available at retailers nationwide.
Consumers who believe they are in possession of the recalled acetaminophen or those who have ingested the caplets should also contact the Perrigo Company at 877-546-0504.
