SGS Introduces Fast Battery Testing Solution to China with BATAS
SGS has introduced its Battery Testing Automatic System (BATAS) into Chinese laboratories to help manufacturers ensure their batteries are reliable, perform well, and are safe. The rapid growth experienced in IT technologies, especially for products such as smartphones, tablets and laptops, has led to a comparable expansion in the demand for testing and certification services for consumer batteries. Currently, the market is growing at around 20% per year. In 2016 it was estimated to be worth RMB 200 million.
Until the introduction of BATAS, testing of consumer batteries was constrained by limitations on the number of batteries that could be tested at one time. Large numbers of samples, long test durations and strict environmental protection regulations all conspired to slow down the process, meaning a new, more effective system needed to be developed.
BATAS is an automated and robotic system for testing batteries and can now be found in SGS battery testing laboratories across China. Developed by SGS’s EEC laboratory, it improves battery test efficiency, simplifies the workflow, enhances levels of consistency, and reduces both manual handling and the margin for error.
BATAS is controlled by SGS’s copyrighted Safety Testing Automation System (STAS), which allows robotic arms to install and remove test samples. It also operates all the different testing devices and is capable of automatically switching test items in different locations, meaning it can function 24-hours a day.
BATAS includes the following technical solutions:
• Electrical devices on the opening and closing mechanisms of testing chambers
This allows for the automatic operation of battery testing chambers (including altitude simulation/low pressure chamber, temperature chamber, etc.)
• Introduction of interconnected communication system for test equipment
BATAS streamlines the testing process with SGS specialists converting equipment to meet a unified communication requirement
• Automatic loading and unloading of battery samples
• Testing of battery precondition/overcharge/over-discharge is automated with data being routinely collected
• Chamber automation
Battery samples are preconditioned and fixed on material plates, allowing them to flow in batches to the different chambers. The robots can place the samples accurately according to the program
• Robots transfer samples to vibration/impact testing
• Automatic warehouse monitoring Robots load and unload samples to pre-specified locations. BATAS monitors the warehouse in real time, preventing sample collision
BATAS is the next generation in consumer battery testing. It uses automation to reduce laboratory workloads, increase security, improve consistency, and create seamless and coherent workflows.
As demand for IT products continues to grow, the need for battery testing services is also increasing. BATAS is the ideal solution for manufacturers looking for efficient, accurate and safe testing of their batteries.
