Czech Biotech Company Takes a New Approach to Commercialise its

A Czech biotechnological company LentiKat’s a.s. has launched a new revolutionary product for pharmaceutical and food industry – industrial encapsulation. This product offers a significant cost reduction for enzyme- or bacteria-driven production processes, regardless of the type or origin of the bio-catalytic material. Supported by the previous successful development of several products across various fields of biotechnological industry, LentiKat’s a.s. is now bringing a unique non process-specific product.

The announced product is based on Lentikats Biotechnology, a novel technique for the immobilisation (encapsulation) of free enzymes or bacteria into a porous hydrogel matrix made of polyvinyl alcohol. The main reason for the immobilisation of biological material in pharmaceutical and food industry is to enable a repetitive use of the often very costly material and to reduce the costs for the consequent separation of the bio-material from the reaction media. Such immobilisation has been successfully tested in production of precursors of semi-synthetic antibiotics, production of lactose-free milk or lactic acid. Lentikats Biotechnology is in many aspects superior to other available immobilisation techniques. The unique lentil-like shape and high stability of the matrix combine in a durable carrier with no diffusion limits, yet with convenient size for easy separation. The immobilisation using Lentikats Biotechnology is carried out under very mild conditions and the technology is applicable to any enzyme of bacteria either in its free form or cross-linked, dead or viable cells.

The comprehensive character of Lentikats Biotechnology offers countless potential applications in the world of biotechnology. “In the effort to commercialise this technology world-wide, we would need to learn and understand thousands of biotechnological processes in order to select the ones with the highest potential,” Dr. Ludek Karasek explains the development of the new product. “There might be plenty of such processes within one pharmaceutical production company! So, we decided to transfer the selection process to our customer’s side. Having a deep knowledge of their processes, our customers will instantly know where the optimal application would be.” To demonstrate their belief in the technology, the experts in LentiKat’s a.s. offer a free sample of one of their products or a free test immobilisation of a provided bio-catalytic material.

LentiKat’s a.s. has now started a large campaign to introduce their new product to the main biotechnological companies around the world. They expect that by working closely together with their customers from the early project stages will reflect in rather fast development and implementation.

LentiKat’s a.s. is a privately-owned company focused on the production and supplies, development and implementation of immobilised cells and enzymes. The Company's main goal is the global implementation of Lentikats Biotechnology in fermentation, biotransformation and bioconversion processes. This primarily concerns the development, production and application of Lentikats Biocatalysts in broad range of industries, such as distillery, waste water treatment, pharmaceutics and food industry. The headquarters as well as the production plant are located in the Czech Republic.
