Racy action: The snowboard-pros Joanie Anderson and Ursula Smith on the typical 'y-course' during the 'Jeep King of the Mountain'.

Up to now the 'King of the Mountain' used to reign in North America exclusively. Since 1993 this title has been the most sought-after in winter sports from Banff in Canada to Utah and Vermont in the USA. Alas, the reign never lasts for long: the sovereigns of the summits are not elected, but have to win the white crown for themselves by their own skills year after year. And this year the incentive is even greater than ever before, because, for the first time, there is also an Austrian throne to win for these kings and queens of winter sports.

The 'Jeep King of the Mountain Championship Series' is looking for the best athletes on skis and boards. While teams and single athletes have only competed against each other at American winter sports places like Aspen, Mammoth or Sugarbush so far, the specialists on snow are also starting in the 'Europa-Sportregion Zell am See-Kaprun' this season. On 20th and 21st January 2007 the elite is meeting on Schmittenhöhe to decide about their new sovereign on European soil for the first time.

In the USA, the event enjoys an excellent reputation. Its outstanding importance for the American sports scene can be told from the extent of the TV coverage planned: the competitions in Zell am See and Kaprun will be broadcast by one of America's biggest TV channels, Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS), directly after the National Football League - the sport that reaches the highest viewing figures altogether in the USA.

The interest in the event is enormous in Europe, too. Even now the region is preparing for the approaching spectacle - after all, the conditions for the races have to be quite perfect. After the race in Snowbird (Utah) and before the events in Taos (New Mexico) and Telluride (Colorado), the participants will be able to win important points for overall victory on this second leg of the championships.

In every race, two athletes compete against each other on a slalom course. The protagonists start simultaneously in a blue and a red lane which later converge into a single course. While skiers and snowboarders alike can prove their skills on this Y-cross course in the USA, the pistes of the 'Europa-Sportregion' belong to the boarders exclusively. In order to qualify successfully, the athletes have to master two runs of which the faster is the one that counts. The two best athletes eventually meet in the final - hard work that demands plenty of patience, nerve, and stamina from the future 'King of the Mountain'.

More information on the 'Jeep King of the Mountain' championships is to be found at www.jeepskiing.com on the Internet. Further information on the snowboard offers of the 'Europa-Sportregion Zell am See-Kaprun' can be called up at www.europasportregion.info.

General Information:
With its 14,000 beds and two million overnight stays a year, the 'Europa-Sportregion Zell am See-Kaprun' is one of the most important holiday regions in Austria. More than 40 activities like rafting, golf, and walking are offered during the summer months. In the cold season of the year rides in horse-drawn sleighs or snowshoe walks provide a welcome change. 56 chair lifts and cable cars take skiers to thick powder snow on 132 kilometres of pistes - snowboarders find an ideal terrain at the Snowpark on the glacier plateau of Kitzsteinhorn, 2,600 metres above sea-level. Here, skiing and snowboarding is possible even in summer. Moreover, the renowned German publishing house of 'Falk Verlag' has named Zell am See and Kaprun as the most family-friendly holiday region in Europe.
