Clearwater Community Volunteers Create Christmas in October; Plan 26th Annual Winter Wonderland

On October 3rd, with only thirty days until the start of construction for the annual Winter Wonderland, the Clearwater Community Volunteers met at their new center, to hash out the final details for the 26th Annual Winter Wonderland.

“Generations of families have enjoyed this annual event,” said Pam Ryan Anderson, the Executive Director for the Clearwater Community Volunteers, “and though I wish I could wave a magic wand and have it all appear, it takes a lot of planning to make it come out just right.”

Part of this initial meeting included veteran volunteers working out the targets left to be done in order to provide the community with a family-friendly holiday activity that also helps families and children in need. This includes coordinating the efforts of several other volunteer groups who help the CCV members to construct Winter Wonderland, which takes approximately 2,000 man hours.

This year’s Winter Wonderland will occur from December 1st until the 22nd at Downtown Clearwater’s Osceola Courtyard, located on the corner or Fort Harrison Avenue and Drew Street.

The Alpine-themed holiday village is free to enter, but guests are encouraged to donate a new toy as part of the Christmas toy drive. Activities include entertainment, photos with Santa Claus, cookie decorating with Mrs. Claus, a petting zoo and pony rides.

“Working with the Clearwater Community Volunteers is a privilege.” said Clemence Chevrot, Director of the Clearwater Community Volunteers Center. “Each volunteer is driven to help children and families in Pinellas County.”

Since 1993, the Clearwater Community Volunteers have brought the spirit of Christmas to thousands of families through Winter Wonderland. Sponsored by the Church of Scientology Flag Service Organization, it’s a month-long charity drive that was founded on one woman’s desire to help children – to the tune of 150,000 to date – who might not be able to experience Christmas.

Ms. Chevrot said, “What L. Ron Hubbard wrote, ‘I like to help others and count it as my greatest pleasure in life…’ exemplifies the reason the Clearwater Community Volunteers produce Winter Wonderland every year. Each new toy donated at Winter Wonderland goes to children who may not receive a holiday gift otherwise. This is a long-standing Clearwater tradition and I am proud to be a part of it.”
