High Gas Prices Leading to Increased Online Sales
More Clicks than Bricks this Holiday SeasonThis holiday season may become the first time that online e-tailers overtake brick and mortar businesses in the fight for consumer dollars. Most shoppers agree that they would alter their shopping habits of gas prices remain high.
TEMECULA, CA - Dec. 13, 2005
Increased fuel costs this holiday shopping season might help online retailers.
Most shoppers are saying they would alter their shopping habits if gas prices remain high, according to a poll of almost 2,000 adults who said they planned to do some online shopping this year. Almost half of those said they'll shop online more to reduce their gasoline use. "What we're seeing is the natural progression from offline shopping to online shopping as consumers learn that they can save money and buy with confidence from online retailers" says Cam Forbes of Opus One Ventures (http://www.opusoneventures.com).
And what's the most attractive proposition with online shopping, as opposed to the traditional sort? Three-quarters cited the ability to shop anytime, regardless of the hour. Nearly that many, almost 70 percent, said they liked avoiding crowded parking lots and long lines at stores.
"Online shoppers I have spoken to cited several factors that point to increased sales this year," Forbes said. "Backlinkcentral (http://www.backlinkcentral.com) found that the top three reasons are higher gas prices, people are more comfortable with online shopping, and the press has been very positive about online shopping."
Forbes has been tracking these trends through his online forums available at http://www.backlinx.com.
