“Water is Life” celebrates National Geographic’s "Written in Water"

The island of Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, May 1 & 2: world-renowned for its beautiful beaches, clean water, musicians, poets, authors, visiting presidents, and endless stream of celebrities, Martha’s Vineyard will host the “Water is Life” celebration on the first weekend in May.

The weekend will celebrate water along with the launch of National Geographic’s Written in Water: Messages of Hope for Earth’s Most Precious Resource, and National Geographic magazine’s new issue dedicated to water. Proceeds will benefit the high school’s Science Fair World Waterway Awards and ongoing research.

During the day on May 1, the event will feature a panel of renown water people such as Alexandra Cousteau (granddaughter of Jaques-Yves Cousteau and founder of Blue Legacy); Lynne Cherry (best-selling author of 30 children’s books); Ellsworth Havens (President of Rotary International's Water and Sanitation Rotary Action Group); Irena Salina (director of award-winning water film FLOW), Jamie Workman (renowned water author, speaker, consultant), and William Waterway Marks (award-winning water book author, researcher, speaker).

On the evening of May 1, Bunch of Grapes Bookstore will host a VIP book-signing party followed by the first US release of National Geographic’s new film, “Shark Eden.” SHARK EDEN was produced, written, and shot by Adam Geiger and Colette Beaudry's of, Sealight Pictures, located on Martha’s Vineyard. As an added bonus, the event will feature four film shorts of first-release environmental films from the bestselling children's book author/illustrator/film director - Lynne Cherry.

The evening of May 2 will host a gala reception and book-signing at Edgartown’s Old Whaling Church. The event will feature award winning R. Carlos Nakai, who is recognized as the world's premier Native American flutist; Katie Mayhew, the beloved 16-year-old singing phenom from Martha's Vineyard who won the grand prize in the first ever 'Boston Pops Sing Off’; the globe trotting Martha’s Vineyard Minnesingers; famed water activist, Alexandra Cousteau, and the water poetry of local Poet Laureate, Fan Ogilvie.
