Richard Nussel

Foodies should rejoice: Now Relais & Châteaux Hertelendy Kastély expects you with the most exciting culinary experience.

Richard Nussel has been leading the kitchen of the first Hungarian member of Relais & Châteaux since the beginning of this year. He accumulated his experience over 20 professional years in the most outstanding establishment of gastronomy, nearly all of them Michelin star restaurants. Amongst others he worked in the Grand Chef Relais & Châteaux member „Schwarzwaldstube“ restaurant that has been awarded three Michelin stars, also another Relais & Châteaux member, the Longueville Manor hotel in Jersey. We should not forget about the 2 Michelin star Wald- und Schlosshotel Friedrichsruhe, the 1 Michelin star Landhaus Scherrer in Hamburg, and the 2 Michelin star restaurant of Vila Joya in Portugal.

The kitchen of the Palace Hotel prepares as much as possible from the produce of the hotel’s own organic gardens: bread, honey and even home-made sausages. Chef Richard Nussel does not appreciate convenience foods, and a kitchen full of aroma is what is truly important to him. All products speak for themselves: porcini should taste like porcini, and potato soup should taste like potato soup. And because the hotel is located in one of the best hunting regions of Europe, freshly caught game is never a rarity on the plates. The menu changes on a daily basis; guests never eat the same thing twice. They are consequent in buying the best raw materials only. The 39-year-old chef bases his creations on classic Hungarian cuisine making them more modern, more attractive and lighter, too. One of the signature features of the menus created by the German chef is the use of Fuji apples that grow in the own orchard of the hotel. These apples always feature in the menu in one way or another every day.

Speaking about his new home he admits that he did know much about Hungary before, but the country, its people and local wines positively surprised him. He was finally convinced by the awarding of the Relais & Châteaux membership to the palace hotel, and the people who work at the hotel and give their best day after day with love, friendship and helpfulness.

Named after the marvelous foliage of a typical tree of the region, the gourmet restaurant „Albizzia” of Hertelendy Kastélyszálló offers only 40 seats – it is small but outstanding.

Hertelendy Kastélyszálló offers three-day gourmet packages from the middle of February till the end of October, which include, among others, a five-course and an eight-course menu complete with a meet-and-greet with Chef Richard Nussel and a wine and cheese tasting in the own wine cellar of the palace. The Chef also offers cooking courses upon request, and he even shares some recipes with the guests. Privately, the Chef Nussel prefers to eat some nice grilled sausages with fine mustard.

Relais & Châteaux Hertelendy Kastély***** is a jewel box in the heart of the Somogy Hills. Surrounded by a landscaped park and 220 kilometers from Budapest, the castle was built by the wealthy Andor Hertelendy in the early 1920's. Currently in Swiss ownership, the homely atmosphere of the five-star hotel mansion is paired with refined elegance.

Guests can book 14 rooms in the castle and six additional apartments in the Hunter's Lodge. Architectural elements of the last century were retained during the renovation works, however, even the highest demands were respected when furnishing the rooms: all rooms come with LCD television sets and DVD players for added comfort.

The castle became known to the Hungarian public through the Hungarian film "SOS Love" shot here in 2006, and it even offers a conference room with state of the art technology for discrete meetings and discussions. Even the entire castle can be booked for meetings, private parties or weddings, so that a truly exclusive experience can be secured to all participants.

Hertelendy Kastély offers unparalleled luxury also to those who are in search of an active holiday. The surroundings of the castle is a renowned hunting ground, even Count Zsigmond Széchenyi was a regular guest of the Hertelendy family here. The castle park offers a wide variety of sports: riding, tennis, Olympic skeet and a golf putting green. All a reminder of the aristocratic traditions that characterize the former life of the castle. Another true speciality of the house is the original Finnish sauna with wood heating in the park: our Kelo sauna. Hertelendy Kastély is the first in Hungary to offer the exclusive products of Ligne St. Barth for body and facial treatments, a favorite of stars imported from the Caribbean.

Nature also enjoys luxury in Hertelendy Kastély: green energy sources are used to the max. The heating of the castle and hot water for the pools and bathrooms are provided by the 55 degree hot thermal well, so that the building produces no carbon-dioxide.

The castle is located in Kutas-Kozmapuszta, between Kaposvár and Nagykanizsa, 50 kilometers from Lake Balaton. Guests arriving by helicopter or pravate air plane can use a separate heliport and hangar and the private landing field.

Background information
Owner

Well known for his hotel investments in western Europe, the Swiss owner has seen the facility with just 14 rooms and the adjacent hunter's lodge with 6 rooms as an excellent opportunity and invested approximately 5 billion forints into the former family residence of the Hertelendys and the 300 ha property in 2007.

History
Andor Hertelendy and his family lived here and operated a substantial fruit and agricultural farm. They built the mansion and the surrounding landscaped park in the early 1920's. When designing the building that blends into the landscape and is free from any ostentation, it was also an important consideration that the owners had a vibrant social life. The rooms of the castle were a reflection of the atmosphere of the era and the then fashionable lifestyle: there was a separate library and a study for the head of the family where he could take care of the business of the estate. Built with great care, the family lived in the house until the end of the Second World War. The descendants maintained the property until its nationalization. The Kutas State Cooperative that operated here also preserved the structural integrity of the house, so that it did not see the fate of some other similar buildings. Hertelendy Kastély was purchased and rescued from final dilapidation by László Hagyánek in 1997. It was opened for guests as a three-star castle hotel in 2000. However, the estate changed owners again in 2004. Due to the substantial investments of the Swiss owner, the first five-star hotel of the region awaits guests in search of a special experience since the spring of 2007.
