Pharmacists Impressed by a Smart Approach to NHS Health Checks

02-11-2010 10:29 AM CET | Health & Medicine

Press release from: Health Smart

Many pharmacists visiting the Health-Smart stand at the 1st Yorkshire Pharmacy Practice Conference were impressed by the latest technology to appear for use in the NHS Health Checks market place.

SmartHeartScore is an interactive patient Risk assessment tool for the NHS Health Check, to allow large numbers of patients to be assessed quickly and easily for their likely hood to develop vascular problems such as heart disease, diabetes and kidney disease.

SmartHeartScore not only assess non modifiable risk factors, such as age and gender, but it also takes into account modifiable risk factors such as diet, exercise, and alcohol consumption, changes of which can have a major impact on a patient’s health.

"I've never seen anything like it before!"

Conference delegates appreciated that Smart Heart Score allows them to continue dispensing operations whilst their patient completes the NHS Health Check via a touch screen in the consulting room. The system automatically calls the pharmacist when the patient de-briefing stage is reached so that he may provide health professional input and advice to his patient. All risk scores are calculated automatically so the burden of work for pharmacy staff is reduced.

Blood testing is made easy by the connection of a Cholestech LDX machine that requires only one finger prick blood sample to test for blood glucose, total cholesterol, HDL, LDL & triglycerides. The results are automatically fed back into the Smart Heart system, removing the risk of data entry error.

In addition to identifying patients at risk of cardio vascular disease, Health-Smart are able to offer computerised cognitive behavioural therapies using the same system. Therapies for smoking cessation, weight loss and high blood pressure could be offered by the pharmacy - either paid for by the patient or paid as PCT commissioned care pathways.
