User Report - Praise for LSR Production Line

A customized production line for medical LSR applications by Scheugenpflug AG meets all client expectations
Liquid silicone rubber, or LSR, is an exceptionally versatile substance. Used in almost every technical area for products as diverse as protective coatings, electronics seals and plumbing washers, the medical industry has discovered the enormous potential of this material as well. It is used for producing heart catheters, baby cups and pacifiers, masks and contact lenses, to name but a few of the countless applications. Experienced in engineering machinery on behalf of the medical industry for many years, Scheugenpflug AG designs production lines that handle a wide variety of dispensing materials. In 2009, Scheugenpflug AG has built a total of two complete client-specific and fully automated production lines for LSR applications in the medical sector.

The Task: The project started with a request from a renowned manufacturer of medical products. They were looking for a fully automated production line capable of dispensing liquid silicone with highest precision. The aim was to fill the dispensing mass into a mold and have it cure inside. The primary challenge in this case was to fill up the highly complex shape of the mold seamlessly with medical device grade liquid silicone. Second, of course, it was imperative to comply with the tight process safety regulations specific to the medical device industry.

The Highlights: The Scheugenpflug AG engineering team custom-designed a fully automated conveyor line system to meet the requirements. All production steps, such as dispensing, filling and curing are performed in a sequence of intricately devised workflows. The complex shape of the mold combined with the material properties required an elaborate sequence of movements to be performed. The details of the production process are too well thought-out to be disclosed. Sophisticated monitoring and control mechanisms implemented in every individual production step ensure that the material quantity, mold shape and dispensing equipment are in perfect state and properly working. The high level of automation realized in this production line prevents external factors, such as human error, soiling or other disturbances from influencing the process safety. At the heart of the system is a Scheugenpflug Industry PC, which controls the complete sequence of processes and ensures full traceability. The LSR product manufacturer and now satisfied owner of the production lines described above has expressed interest in purchasing further lines for other production sites abroad.
