The Gertrude B. Nielsen Child Care and Learning Center Celebrates 30th Anniversary

NORTHBROOK, IL — Thirty years ago history was made when The Gertrude B. Nielsen Child Care and Learning Center opened its doors to all children. The first of its kind, the Center was unique in its philosophies, offerings, and learning environment. In the proceeding three decades, The Nielsen Center has made remarkable strides and contributed to the growth of thousands of children. The Center continues to be recognized for its comprehensive approach to excellence in early childhood development and education.

“The 30th anniversary highlights The Gertrude B. Nielsen Child Care and Learning Center’s mission of partnership with our families and community to develop excellence in early childhood education,” said Reagan Miller, Executive Director. “Children ages 6 weeks through Kindergarten experience an individualized curriculum which focuses on exploration and discovery in a unique setting. We create supportive, natural learning environments, driven by the interests of the children.”

“At this time, we look forward to celebrating our achievements with our families,” said Miller. “Most importantly, this anniversary allows us to reflect on where we have been, and how we plan to continue to grow and nurture the next generation of students.”

CELEBRATORY EVENTS FOR THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY

Commemorative celebrations will occur throughout the year for The Nielsen Center’s families, culminating in a ribbon cutting ceremony and commemorative art installation to be revealed in late summer 2018. The mosaic tile art installation will reflect the founder Gertrude B. Nielsen’s vision for the love of nature and children. The art installation was designed for its unique ability to capture the essence of our children and their endless imaginations and discovery of the world.

The anniversary celebration also highlights The Nielsen Center community engagement opportunities and enrichment programs. Families will attend an outdoor concert experience and picnic compliments of our area sponsors at The Ravinia Park in Highland Park, Illinois.

The 30th anniversary celebration will honor the late Gertrude B. Nielsen, who founded the not-for-profit center with her son, Arthur C. Nielsen, Jr. in 1988. At the age of 90, Mrs. Nielsen fulfilled her vision and dream of starting a childcare center for working families.

Our focus on inspiring creativity, fostering curiosity and teaching in a unique setting has been consistent with the original concept,” said Sonja Nielsen, President, Gertrude B. Nielsen Child Care and Learning Center Board of Directors, and granddaughter of the founder. “I am proud of the exceptional care, attention to detail and thoughtful programming that takes place at The Center every day. Granny truly was a visionary when she founded this most special place and I am grateful that the tremendous staff carries on her legacy.”
