Transitional Home Style Gains Popularity in San Antonio

Mattern & FitzGerald Custom Builders was recently awarded the People’s Choice Award for their project entry in the 2009 Parade of Homes. Their entry was a “Transitional” style of home, which is a blend between modern and traditional types of architecture. The award was significant because it signaled a potential shift in taste from the more Traditional, Mediterranean or Tuscan styles so popular in years past Parades.

“As a builder, we are always looking for the next new trend,” says Kevin FitzGerald, President of Mattern & FitzGerald. “We made a calculated bet that the Transitional style, made so popular in other parts of the country would be well-received in San Antonio.”

The voting is done throughout the 9 days of the Parade of Homes by the actual people that visit the event. This year, an estimated 25,000 people attended the event from all parts of the city and surrounding areas, which made the results a good sampling of public sentiment. “The results were approximately a 40% margin of victory,” commented Vice President, Jason Mattern. “The difference from the first to second was significant enough to take notice that people are ready for something new.”

Transitional architecture takes traditional elements, like wood and stone and adds subtle contemporary elements that are designed to be a nice compromise for contrasting styles. FitzGerald adds, “This is the perfect home for the couple that can’t seem to agree on the other’s style because it is so flexible in its design and clean lines.”
