Press release from: Fraunhofer IESE

Following the success in 2008 of the Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering IESE in the Germany-wide contest “Germany – Land of Ideas”, the two Fraunhofer institutes in Kaiserslautern have now won this award jointly.

The award was given for the innovative conference “Digital Engineering for Commercial Vehicles”, which is accompanied by a technical exhibition. The conference focuses on the exchange of experience between researchers and users. It is part of the innovation cluster “Digital Engineering for Commercial Vehicles”, where the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM and Fraunhofer IESE together with cluster partners from industry analyze and optimize the digital inner workings of tractors, trucks, or excavators.

The cluster aims at expanding the knowledge of the high-tech experts from research and industry in a practically relevant way. The general public as well will learn something about the digital inner workings of heavy machinery from the two Fraunhofer institutes, during an Open House to be held at the end of October, concurrently with the award ceremony scheduled for 28 October 2009.

More on this project, which is funded in part by EFRE funds of the European Union, can be found at: http://www.nutzfahrzeuge.fraunhofer.de/english/.

“Germany – Land of Ideas” is a joint initiative of the German Federal Government and German businesses under the patronage of German President Horst Köhler; since 2006, 365 awards have been given each year to “Landmarks of Ideas” that strengthen Germany as a business location by showcasing inventiveness and visionary thinking.

Fraunhofer-Institute for Experimental Software Engineering

Fraunhofer IESE is one of the worldwide leading research institutes in the area of software and systems development. A major portion of the products offered by our collaboration partners is defined by software. These products range from automotive and transportation systems to telecommunication and telematics equipment, from information systems and medical devices to software systems for the public sector. Our solutions allow flexible scaling. This makes us a competent technology partner for organizations of any size – from small companies to major corporations.

Under the leadership of Prof. Dieter Rombach and Prof. Peter Liggesmeyer, the past decade has seen us making major contributions to strengthening the emerging IT location Kaiserslautern.
In the Fraunhofer Information and Communication Technology Group, we are cooperating with other Fraunhofer institutes on developing trend-setting key technologies for the future.

Fraunhofer IESE is one of 57 institutes of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. Together we have a major impact on shaping applied research in Europe and contribute to Germany’s competitiveness in international markets. As part of the Fraunhofer Center Kaiserslautern, the institute is officially a “Selected Landmark 2009“ in the contest “365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas“.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM

The core competencies of ITWM are the classical disciplines of applied mathematics, such as numerics, differential equations, stochastics, and optimization. These are complemented by mathematically-oriented theoretical topics that have emerged as border areas between mathematics and technology. Using these core competencies, ITWM has, to date, worked on almost 300 projects in its business areas “Virtual Material and Product Design”, “Process Simulation”, and “Diagnostic Systems”.

Products range from know-how poured into software via consulting and support offers to system solutions. ITWM does not only use simulation software, it also develops it itself, often in collaboration with leading software companies. ITWM does not only want to build a bridge between the real world and the virtual world, but also wants to be a link between university mathematics and its practical application. Therefore, its close connection to the Department of Mathematics at the University of Kaiserslautern plays a special role for ITWM.

Currently, Fraunhofer ITWM has 150 employees (including 90 scientists). The director of the institute is Prof. Dieter Prätzel-Wolters. It is one of the 56 institutes of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, which, as the largest organization for applied research in Europe, contributes to national and international competitiveness.
