Introducing the new KNX IoT 3rd Party API

Introducing the new KNX IoT 3rd Party API

A collaboration between Schneider Electric, and ProKNX at the Light + Building trade-show in Frankfurt in October 2022 successfully showed the functionality of the new KNX IoT 3rd-Party API standard.

The companies demonstrated that effective interoperability is possible between devices when using the new KNX IoT 3rd Party API. Thanks to the use of this recently launched standard, successful interaction was easily created between the Schneider Electric logic controller WISER and the ProKNX voice-controlled smart speaker, Aragon.

The KNX IoT 3rd Party API by KNX was launched in 2021. This protocol democratises the smart automation industry as it acts as a gateway to translate and standardise communication between devices. This allows the task of creating an automation solution for any project to become much less complex, as professionals are not locked into any one range of products. This ease of deployment holds true for all projects, from home automation set-ups for single dwellings, to large-scale solutions for large buildings . The API enables non-KNX and KNX products to work seamlessly together in a single installation solution when controlled by any server that supports this standardised protocol.

Wiser for KNX, previously known as homeLYnk, is the first gateway to support the KNX IoT 3rd Party API. The Schneider Wiser logic controller has a number of important functions, including simple to use visualisation and control of a smart automation solution in KNX and Modbus networks, and as a gateway to translate and enable communication between different products. This latter function is greatly enhanced by the addition of the KNX IoT API. The ProKNX smart speaker, Aragon, is a voice control system for home automation that works without the need for an Internet connection. The voice recognition runs entirely on the device to protect the privacy of user data. Thanks to the high-quality protocol specification, the two companies proved that the standard was capable of solving the task quickly and efficiently.

Christian Kiefel, CEO of ProKNX states, "The KNX IoT 3rd Party API is a game-changer for the smart automation industry, giving professionals greater scope to easily create an intelligent solution to suit every automation project." Kiefel continued to explain that the advent of the new KNX standardised approach will result in far easier setup and adjusts for a larger portfolio of servers, providing a win-win situation, both for professionals and end-users.

The standardisation of interaction between smart products gives the industry numerous advantages, from lowering the cost of construction as less investment is required to create a working solution, to increasing speed of project delivery thanks to ease of device integration into a project. Reliability of a system will increase substantially due to lowered need to design work-arounds for incompatibilities. For any given automation project, the choice of products becomes far larger thanks to the KNX IoT API standardisation. The maintenance of an in-place solution is also simplified, again lowering costs and time needed by professionals to oversee the continuing function of a pre-existing IoT system.
