Alternative Mobility: Lip Service or Real Market Chance

In three European countries, the consultants Hagstotz ITM, residing in Pforzheim, analyzed the acceptance hybrid drives, electronically operated vehicles and other alternative concepts already have today. Almost 1,000 people from Germany, England and Italy, representative for the population that can be accessed online, took part in this current analysis.

On a first glance, it seems the results match the optimistic outlook of many politicians and manufacturers: Two thirds of the citizens of both genders are interested in the subject of alternative drives for vehicles, 50% already investigated such concepts in more detail, and only 5% definitely exclude them for their own future vehicles. The interviewees are interested not only in four-wheel concepts for limos or small cars, but with respect to second vehicles and short drives, they are also interested in two-wheelers with alternative drives.

The motifs are multilayered, with a preference on the protection of the environment. 77% are convinced that vehicles with alternative drives will win through over the next years, in particularly if there were state premiums or tax benefits as incentives. The scrapping premium paid in Germany obviously was a successful example. However the enthusiasm would drain away if alternative drives were given their own lanes in cities: this is clearly refused by a majority of 61%.

More in-depth results show considerable barriers against use and purchase. For instance only 17% would accept a limited range of their vehicle of only 200 kilometres with one battery charge. Only a small minority would be willing to pay the additional 30% price surcharge, which is realistic at the time being. Lip service supported with environmental protection arguments alone is not a solid foundation for real market chances. The international analysis of Hagstotz ITM illustrates the edge from which manufacturers and retailers could start today.
