Ozone therapy: how active oxygen revitalizes regions affected by circulatory disturbances

On hearing the catch word 'ozone' many of us tend to think of the depletion of the protecting layer around our fragile blue planet, risky levels of air pollution during the summer months, or their latest visit to the indoor swimming pool. It is less widely known, though, that this gas can be used in medical therapy, too. Depending on the respective case, the administration of ozone can be an extremely efficient treatment measure. To be able to implement this kind of treatment safely, health-care professionals need some experience and training as well a generator which is able to produce ozone in medically relevant concentrations. Ozone is a molecule consisting of three oxygen atoms, which gave it the byname 'active oxygen'. The bluish coloured gas with the peculiar smell was discovered in the middle of the 19th century. Only a few years later, Werner von Siemens succeeded in producing a relatively large amount of ozone electrically by means of an ozone tube which was named after its inventor. This achievement was the basis for the development of modern high-tech systems such as 'Hyper Medozon comfort' and 'Medozon compact' manufactured by HERRMANN Apparatebau GmbH. For the production of therapeutic ozone, the generator uses pure therapeutic oxygen instead of breathing air. The resulting gas mixture does not harm body tissue but fights viruses, bacteria, and fungi efficiently instead. For this reason, active oxygen has become more and more popular as an agent to disinfect drinking water or swimming pools. In the latter case, it replaces chlorine which has been used for decades.

Current medical literature reports that ozone treatment can improve blood circulation. Especially in patients with an impeded blood flow or angiopathy, physicians and health-care professionals have been able to come up with good results. Biochemical processes play a decisive role in improving blood circulation. Active oxygen has a beneficial impact on the surface of the red blood cells, reduces clumping and restores the flexibility of the erythrocytes. As a consequence, the overall surface of the individual red blood cells increases and they are enabled to carry more oxygen through the body and reach areas which formerly were not accessible anymore - that is the theory. Ozone therapy could thus support and improve oxygen absorption in the lungs, clean arteries and veins, and allow areas which used to suffer from a lack of circulation to be supplied with oxygen again - and this process kicks off without lengthy waiting periods.

External administration of ozone or autohaemotherapy - the choice of the therapy method depends on the individual case. In many dermatological conditions like eczemas, the antiseptic quality of ozone takes effect. Ozonized water or oil can be of benefit here. In wound-healing disorders which can coincide with open fractures, so-called limb bagging may be a supportive measure since ozone fights fungi, bacteria, and viruses efficiently. Circulatory disorders or virus infections on the other hand can be treated with autohaemotherapies. In normobaric therapy, the patient's blood sample is enriched with ozone and subsequently reinfused via IV bag. HAB's standard system 'Medozon compact' allows health-care professionals to implement these therapies quickly and safely.

More functions, more safety: 'Hyper Medozon comfort' offers an increased range of applications. The system achieves very good results in demanding treatments such as hyperbaric ozone therapy. In comparison to normobaric treatment, it boasts essential advantages for patients and therapists alike. 'Hyper Medozon comfort' allows for a significantly higher reinfusion pressure in the vacuum bottle. With this system, a larger amount of blood can be enriched with ozone at a time, which allows therapists to hope for a more efficient treatment amount in less time. While reinfusion in normobaric treatment generally takes 20 minutes, the constant pressure of HAB's premium system reduces this period to 10 minutes - a great benefit for the patient. When reinfusion is completed, the system is switched off automatically, which makes treatment a comfortable procedure for patient and health-care professional alike.
