The differences between toxins (including Botox) and fillers can sometimes seem confusing, so NYC Top Plastic Surgeon, John A Perrotti MD, will explain how they differ.

While both botulinum toxin and fillers are often used together, they work differently and are used on different facial lines. Lines of expression are best treated with toxin, while lines at rest are best treated with filler.

Toxins, such as Xeomin and Botox, are natural, purified proteins that are used to temporarily relax facial muscles that cause lines and wrinkles. Botulinum toxin is primarily used for skin rejuvenation and the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles by softening the lines caused by facial expression. It is injected into muscles to improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines), around the side of the eyes to improve the look of moderate to severe crow's feet lines and also in the forehead.

The duration of results from toxin injection ranges from 3 to 4 months. There is no downtime associated with this treatment, but you may encounter some slight bruising and swelling directly after treatment. There are no long-term side effects of having wrinkle injections.

Dermal fillers come in many varieties and work by lifting and smoothing targeted folds and wrinkles by adding subtle volume. Fillers help to restore the volume loss that occurs naturally with age and gives a fresher, brighter appearance.

These naturally occurring products are injected into the face and results are seen immediately. Fillers can be used to treat different areas, from fine lines on the more delicate parts of the face to deep skin wrinkles and folds. Results last as long as 18 months after treatment.
