Range of glasses that are used in electronic industry are termed as technical glasses. Popular types of technical glass are borate glass, passivation glass, phosphate glass and chalogenide glass. Technical glass finds its application in household electronic devices, medical instruments and so on.

Borate glass is mainly used in electronic components in the computers, and consists of little or no silica and melts at a relatively low temperature, i.e. around 4500C -550 0C, below than that of various normal glass, metals and ceramics. Borate glass is one of the major components in display panels of computers, mobiles, televisions and other products.

Passivation glass is mainly used to protect components of silicon semi-conductor from mechanical damage and chemical attack. It plays a vital role in the production of silicon chips and microelectronic devices, on other chip components surfaces, for example in thermoresistors, thyristors, diodes and transistors. It is also used in rectifiers and Sinter glass diodes, wafer passivation and glazing of high-voltage varistors, etc. Passivation Glass is also used in aviation, medical and defense industry.

Phosphate glass is used in the construction of secondary electron multipliers.

Chalogenide glass can be made without the presence of oxygen. Chalogenide glass is mainly used in infrared transmitting materials and as switching devices in computer memories because when threshold voltage value increases, its conductivity changes abruptly.

Technical Glass Market: Market Dynamics

Due to increase in utilization of electronics products such as mobile phones and computers, it is expected that the production of technical glass will increase during the forecast period, since technical glass is used in production of electronic devices.
