Extracorporeal CO2 removal is a procedure of partial respiratory support that achieves removal of carbon dioxide from the blood through a low blood flow extracorporeal circuit, without significant effect on blood oxygenation. Extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal systems vary in terms of technology, ability of gas exchange, and characteristics. It ranges from renal dialysis systems to partial extracorporeal support up to systems capable of full extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support with the capability of removing all carbon dioxide production and providing flows high enough to increase oxygen delivery and therefore provide blood oxygenation. Access to the circulation is gained either through using double-lumen cannulae (VV systems) or by separate arterial and venous cannulae (AV systems). Blood flow through the extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal circuits can occur in two ways: using patient’s own arterial blood pressure (pumpless systems) where arterial blood is accessed through an arterial cannula and returned to the venous system via a venous cannula and blood flow can be achieved through a mechanical pump.

High prevalence of respiratory diseases, increase in number of surgical procedures, rapidly aging population, tobacco use in emerging markets, and surge in demand for technologically advanced products are the key drivers of the global Extracorporeal CO2 Removal Market.
