Fraunhofer System Assists Camera Operators and Production Teams in Shooting and Processing Stereo 3D

The Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications, Heinrich Hertz Institute in Berlin presents an Assistance System for the Production of Perfect Stereo 3D at IBC 2009 in Amsterdam.

At IBC 2009 in Amsterdam the Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications, Heinrich Hertz Institute in Berlin presents an assistance system for the production of stereo 3D. The stereoscopic analyzer STAN, developed in association with KUK Film Produktion, Munich, captures, analyses and processes stereo pictures in real-time. This hardware-software combination supports camera operators and production teams in the shooting and processing of 3D film material. See demonstrations of STAN at IBC 2009, Hall 8, Booth C81.

Shooting quality film material or live shots in 3D is a major challenge because many parameters like the stereo baseline, color geometry or camera distance from the object can change from scene to scene. STAN analyses the depth structure of each individual scene and computes the optimal stereo baseline in real-time. Calibration data for color balance and shift-crop-scale processing are computed on-the-fly. STAN combines real-time picture analysis with intelligent automated instruments and an intuitive graphical user interface for assured ease of use without any need for lengthy special training.

World leaders in the development of mobile and fixed communication networks and their key applications

Founded in 1928, over the course of its more than 80 year history the Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications, Heinrich Hertz Institute,
has developed into one of the world’s leading research institutes for the development of mobile and fixed communication networks and
the key technologies that drive them. Today’s R&D focus is on electronic imaging and interactive media, communication networks and photonic components.

In 2008 the Institute had an operating budget of approx. 25 million Euro. The ratio of third party funding lay at 76 percent of which 42 came from industry, 31 percent from contract research for the Federal Government and individual State Governments and 22 percent from funding by the European Union.
