Inseparable Part of Unified Communication Solution: Softphones

Press release from: Matrix Comsec

In today’s fast moving and constantly changing world, truckload of information is exchanged every second. Various communication methods are available for this exchange, but the one that is fast, easy and cost-effective is always preferred. Conventional phones have been the simplest and convenient method of communication. But ever since the boom of mobile technology, their roles have been changing. The deskphones have not become obsolete but have been evolving constantly. They have made transition from TDM to IP but both technologies happen to co-exist even today. This is possible due to collaboration of various communication platforms through a concept known as, ‘Unified Communications’. UC is a modern concept that explains integration of new and legacy communication forms. For example, employees can access directory contacts and calendar from the same interface. Since the same is possible with softphone, they form an integral part of Unified Communication solutions portfolio.

Softphone is nothing but an extension of the VoIP phone. In VoIP phones, the telephone calls are transmitted and received over an IP network and lands on the wired terminal. Softphone is a mobility extension that enables user to manage calling activities from their smartphones, tablets and computers/laptops.

Why Use Softphones?

 Unified Image: Till the time smartphones became popular, customers, clients and partners had to keep a couple of numbers for contact and on the other side, the employee had to manage and carry along multiple devices. The Unified User Client solves this problem and provides a unified image for a single person, as it is an extension of a deskphone, which can work on mobile, laptop or tablet, hence eliminating the use of multiple numbers for different devices. It also protects the privacy of the employee as he/she does not have to share his/her personal contact number. Thus, it increases reliability and customer responsiveness towards the company.

 Mobility: For itinerant employees, on-site and off-site mobility is important owing to connectivity problems faced due to use of Analog methods. Since the UC client operates on IP technology, business opportunities won’t be missed. It not only offers the facility of making and receiving calls on the move but also offers synchronized access of contacts, call logs and other information, and hence saves time and energy of the employee. Additionally, it allows contact grouping and marking favorites adding convenience to routine calling operations. Equipped with other features, dispersed teams can stay connected through video calling, conferencing, instant messaging, chat and more.

 Cost Effective: As it is an application which is compatible with majority mobile phones, computers or tablets, need of buying a dedicated hardware is eliminated and cost is saved. Working on IP protocol, the mobility client enables users to place/receive international calls at reduced rates. Since all the important tasks are completed over calls, traveling time and cost is eliminated.

 Seamless Integration: Softphone, besides offering quick connectivity, provides a set of real-time features. Based on an IP protocol, the extension can be easily integrated with other business applications as well. For instance, Matrix Mobility application is integrated with Microsoft Outlook. The flexibility to conclude mailing and calling activities from the same screen has enabled users to boost their productivity. The employees’ time and efforts for juggling between multiple interfaces is saved and hence, they can focus on key productive tasks. The mobility application also offers facility of Presence Sharing, Hot Keys, Click to Dial, Calendar Integration and more, enabling employees to leverage the true power of Unified Communications. Equipped with basic call management features such as DND, Forward, Mute, Transfer and more, the same can help users handle their regular calling activities easily.

As manufacturing facilities become more automated and interconnected, the need for robust security grows more urgent. Factors like automation, supply chain complexity, and new regulatory requirements introduce security threats that many facilities aren't fully prepared for, putting people, assets, and operations at risk. Modern industrial facilities face a diverse range of risks: ● Cargo Theft: In 2024, U.S. and Canadian businesses faced 3,625 cargo theft incidents-a 27% increase from 2023, according to CargoNet. ● Internal

Is Your Surveillance System Truly Secure - or Just Technically Functional?
In 2017, 123 police CCTV surveillance cameras in Washington D.C. were hacked and taken offline - right before a high-profile public event. The issue wasn't the camera. It was a failure of cybersecurity compliance. (Source: BBC) Imagine a scenario where a major supplier loses a multi-crore government contract in India because their CCTV cameras lacked a mandatory RDSO certification for use on moving coaches. In both cases, the cameras worked. But they

Are Smartphones the Next Surveillance Cameras?
As security threats evolve, so must the tools we use to respond to them. Fixed cameras, once the backbone of any surveillance system, are now only part of a bigger picture. Today's risks are dynamic, mobile, and unpredictable - and in many cases, they don't wait to happen in front of a network camera. Security teams know this reality all too well.
