Polyhydroxyalkanoate Market to Remain Lucrative During 2017 - 2027
Polyhydroxyalkonoate (PHA) is a naturally occurring thermoplastic or elastomeric material produced by bacteria. In other words PHA is polyesters produced during the fermentation of sugar to store energy. These materials are biodegradable in nature and when modified chemically show number of useful properties. In an industrial biosynthesis process, cultures of micro-organisms are allowed to grow until a certain concentration before being provided with a high carbon source material such as sugar (generally from sugarcane); the polyester is then extracted and processed.On the basis of product segment, PHA can be classified as linear PHA and copolymerized PHA. Linear PHA finds major applications in pharmaceuticals and medical industries. Copolymerized PHA i.e. poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PBHA) is expected to witness demand as biodegradable packaging material since it exhibits higher toughness and better flexibility. General applications include food services and disposable items and in agriculture. The PHA market is currently in its initial phase and is expected to show good growth numbers in the near future. Asia-Pacific, Europe, North America, Africa and RoW are the major regions where the market for PHA is concentrated.

One of the major driving factors for this market is a growing awareness towards the use of biodegradable materials. PHA is thermoplastic polyester based material and can be easily processed on conventional plastic machinery such as injection molding and extrusion process etc. This makes PHA very important in the market for its ease of processability. Sugarcane is currently the raw material of choice but industrial vegetable and soya bin oil are expected to be major materials in the next few years. Due to ready availability of raw material, large scale industries are investing capital on R&D of PHA. PHA production from municipal waste is expected to be future trend. As synthetic polymers are formed quickly as compare to biosynthesis, it may restrict the market.
