In an IC engine, EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) gas temperature sensors are used to measure the temperature of the exhaust system. EGR is a technique that is utilized to reduce the nitrogen oxide emissions in petrol/diesel engines. Exhaust gases are reintroduced into the engine combustion chamber to cool the combustion flame. Some vehicles employ an EGR temperature sensor to determine EGR operation. This information is used by the powertrain control module (PCM) to regulate the EGR operation. EGR gas temperature sensor is located in front of the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) and in front of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). It detects the exhaust gas temperature and converts it into a voltage and transmits this signal to the engine ECU in order to control engine conditions to effectively reduce emission. In terms of measurement methods, the automotive EGR gas temperature sensor market can be classified into resistance temperature sensor and thermocouples. In resistance temperature sensors, electrical resistance is generated which correlates with the sensor temperature to indicate the temperature of the system. In thermocouples, the temperature measurement is based on the Seebeck effect, where a voltage is generated across the junction of two conductors of different metals in the presence of a temperature gradient.
In terms of operating temperature range, the automotive EGR gas temperature sensor market can be segmented into NTC thermistor, PTC thermistor, Type N, and Type K. NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) is type of temperature resistance thermistor which has negative temperature coefficient, i.e., in an NTC thermistor, ohmic resistance decreases as temperature increases. Temperature range for this thermistor is -40ºC to +1000ºC. PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) is type of temperature resistance thermistor. In a PTC thermistor, ohmic resistance increases with increase in temperature. Temperature range for this type of thermistor is -40ºC to +1050ºC. Type N and Type P are type of thermocouples. Temperature range for Type N is -40ºC to +1100ºC. Temperature range for Type P is -40ºC to 1200ºC.
