New Report Examines the Growth of Antimicrobial Susceptibility

Antimicrobial resistance is the ability of microorganisms to resist effects of a wide range of antimicrobial drugs. This condition leads to the ineffectiveness of standard treatments against microbial infections, persistence of infectious diseases, and their spread to others. It may require costly and toxic treatments. Antimicrobial resistance is one of the major challenges faced by health care professionals in recent years. Several clinical studies are under development for optimizing the therapeutic management of patients with infections. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests are conducted to detect the possible drug resistance by known microorganisms and to find out the most sensitive antimicrobial drug against the infective microorganism.

Results of these tests help doctors optimize the therapeutic management of patients with infections. Different antimicrobial susceptibility tests and products have been developed including disk diffusion method, broth microdilution method, and rapid automated instrument method. Some of these methods yield qualitative results such as minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), while others provide the qualitative information in three different categories: susceptible, intermediate, and resistant.

Increased usage of antibiotics in the treatment of microbial infections without proper indication and need is one of the most important reasons for development of antimicrobial resistance across the world. Emergence of several microorganisms resistant to antimicrobial drugs and high incidence rate of antimicrobial-resistant infections such as persistent sore throat, recurring urinary tract infection (UTI), and unresponsive case of pneumonia are some of the key factors driving the global antimicrobial susceptibility testing market. It has been observed that more than 50% of antibiotics are not optimally prescribed; sometimes they are prescribed when not needed.

Also, spread of resistant strains of bacteria from person to person and from non-human sources into food, water, and natural environment increases the risk of antimicrobial resistance of pathogens. Development of automated testing equipment and newer tests and methods for detection of antimicrobial susceptibility would propel the antimicrobial susceptibility testing market during the forecast period. Automated testing equipment require a large number of viable organisms; they have limited organism spectrum; and they are quite costlier. This restricts the antimicrobial susceptibility testing market.

Based on product, the market has been classified into tests & kits, culture mediums, and automated test systems. End-users of antimicrobial susceptibility tests include biotechnology & pharmaceutical companies, hospitals & diagnostics centers, veterinary clinics, clinical research laboratories, and academic & research institutes.

In terms of geography, the global antimicrobial susceptibility testing market has been segmented into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and Middle East & Africa. North America accounts for a major market share and is likely to hold a leading market share by 2025 as well. Europe follows North America, holding the second-largest share of the global market. The market in Europe is projected to be growing rapidly during the forecast period.
