New Production Technique for Micro-perforated Absorbers

The acoustics insulation as well as the material glass is playing a more and more important role nowadays. Especially in school- and communication rooms according the study “Fuchs, H.V., Zha X: Acoustics Design for School and Communication Rooms, 1996” the right acoustics insulation is important and essential for more pleasant sound surroundings. Compared to fibered materials, which are already being used for acoustics isolation, glass offers the advantage of being transparent. Thus it does not convey the feeling of being confined. In addition glass compared to other materials offers the advantage of utilizing daylight by which heating and electricity costs can be saved considerably.

Up to now the problem of realizing such MPAs (Micro-Perforated Absorbers) made of glass existed in the technically and industrially usable implementation. For the absorption of sound energy smallest holes and slits in the size of 0.1 to 2 mm have to be realized in glass without boosting the production costs astronomically.

HARKE Imaging now offers the solution for this problem with their special film systems with which industrially usable masks for the sandblasting gravure can be created via photo lithography. The industrial sandblasting, the powder blasting or the air jet machining (AJM) work on basis of the erosion principle with which - with help of finest grit -structures can controlled be transferred to rough materials like for instance glass, ceramic, stone, silicate or also composites. In this process the fine grit is speeded up with compressed air and so selectively removes material on the substrate when colliding. The areas protected by the sandblasting film will however remain untouched. At present lines and other hollows smaller than 80 µm can so be transferred with the film systems by HARKE Imaging.

Which further advantages do HARKE Imaging systems offer compared to other systems?

1: The RapidMask System by HARKE Imaging features the advantage that the photo resist in form of a film can be exposed individually, but also directly after laminating on the substrate. The troublesome and mostly inexact positioning of the sandblasting mask can be omitted.

2: The APM Plus / APM R3 System enables grain sizes up to 100 µm without having to revert to soda soluble photo resist material like for instance Ordyl BV. The systems APM Plus and APM R3 are water soluble and allow an even, controlled removal during the sandblasting process.

In the near future it will also be possible through HARKE Imaging to directly print plane materials digitally like glass and other substances with help of a sandblasting resistant compound paste. This is already now successfully used with customary sandblasting processes and similar applications.
