National Reading Day Brings Surprise $10,000 Donation

Detroit- Jan. 31, 2018- National Reading Day, celebrated January 23, not only consisted of reading activities, games and awards for first through fifth graders at the St. Vincent and Sarah Fisher Center in Detroit, it also brought a surprise $10,000 donation from the Scripps Howard Foundation for the SVSF Children’s Education Program.

Members from the foundation along with WXYZ-TV 7 General Manager Mike Murri presented the check to Diane Renaud, Executive Director/CEO of SVSF. The donation will be used to help children at the SVSF Main Campus in Detroit and families participating in the SVSF Family Learning Program at Coalition on Temporary Shelter (COTS) in Detroit.

"St. Vincent and Sarah Fisher Center is very grateful to the foundation. This donation will go a long way toward our mission of providing free educational services to children and adults in the city," said Renaud.

In the fall 2017, Detroit-area TV stations WXYZ and WMYD raised funds to purchase and donate 5,600 books to SVSF. The Center distributed the books to children throughout Detroit, including those enrolled at SVSF and the Center’s community partners such as the COTS, Detroit Public Library, Christ the King School, Focus: HOPE, NSO and a variety of other community organizations.

St. Vincent and Sarah Fisher Center began in 1844 as St. Vincent’s Academy in Detroit, a kindergarten for orphaned children. The organization evolved through the years and moved to Farmington Hills, establishing an adoption/foster care residence for children. In 2006, when policies and the economy changed, the Center closed its residential doors, but wanted to continue to fulfill its mission of serving at-risk children and adults. Identifying the significant need, the Center returned to Detroit and its roots of education and now provides free, personalized educational support for children and adults. These programs are designed to help build self-sufficiency skills for academic and employment success, personal achievement and dignity. Visit http://www.svsfcenter.org/ to learn more.

The Scripps Howard Foundation strives to advance the cause of a free press while also building healthy communities and an improved quality of life through its support of education, vital social services, enriching arts and culture, and inclusive civic affairs.
