Music - Self-adapting Applications for Mobile Users In Ubiquitous Computing Environments

Music - Self-adapting Applications for Mobile Users In Ubiquitous Computing Environments

The MUSIC Consortium announced today the interim release of the MUSIC platform (v0.3.0), which would be of use for the development of mobile application software and services. The goal of the MUSIC project is to supply a language tool and Middleware environment to make it feasible to develop next generation mobile applications and services, which adapt automatically and seamlessly to the ever-changing context typically facing mobile users. The MUSIC Middleware (www.ist-music.eu) can be applied for the development of adaptive applications for any type of target devices such as PCs, Laptops or mobile phones, which support at least Java 1.4 and must have OSGi available at run-time. The target device can be from different manufacturers using any underlying operating system (Windows Mobile, Symbian, Linux/Palm, BlackBerry and Mac OS X), which provide a Virtual Machine (VM) for Java 1.4. MUSIC applies the LGPL1 licence, which does not apply their restrictions to the resulting software, so that it can be exploited under any chosen form.

The MUSIC platform mainly targets the following users:
- End-users. The user-centric vision of the MUSIC project is accomplished by
maximising the user’s utility and satisfaction by adapting the applications according to the execution context. The end-users will assess positively an improvement in their experience with mobile application in dynamic environments.

- Application developers. The developers do not have to cope with the mobile
fragmentation, which makes harder and more expensive the development of mobile applications. Moreover, the MDA approach and the MUSIC Studio provide a methodology and a set of tools, which simplify the design and implementation of context-aware self-adaptive applications, as well as increase the productivity of the developers. The MUSIC methodology will steer the developer to a user centric approach to maximise the utility of the applications configuration.

- Service providers. Third-party companies can offer components and services, which are easy to incorporate into the application composition. MUSIC enhances the importance of the software re-usability, which enriches the applications with new functionalities and capabilities. Service providers can build a business model over this concept.

The final release of the MUSIC platform is expected in Q2 2010. It is the result of a consortium involving leading brand named organizations as well as leading European researchers and innovators. Interested parties should regularly visit the IST-MUSIC web site, www.ist-music.eu for further development, research results and future releases of the MUSIC middleware.
