Melbourne Mum Encourages Entrepreneurship By Getting Children Interested In Literacy and Coding Over The School Holidays.


Yellow Brick Code, an innovative school holiday program, is turning children aged 5 through to 8 into coders and learning machines in Melbourne, Australia.

When founder Thuy Pham was looking for activities beyond colouring and pasting to keep her 6 year-old daughter entertained over the June school holidays, she found a one-day coding class for girls and immediately enrolled her daughter in the class.

She was both surprised and thrilled as her daughter was successfully able to build her own video game. After attending a follow up Professional Development session, she was excited at the opportunity to provide the experience to her own students and her passion for entrepreneurship took over. “I started my current business when I was just 18 years old, and want my daughter to have the relevant skills to be able to build her own product or company and pave her own way through life if she wants to.”

As the co-founder of Spectrum Tuition, a learning organisation established in 2001 with multiple campuses around Melbourne, and with more set to open through a franchising model in 2018, Thuy has a passion for giving students the opportunity to succeed. When asked about working with students who have difficulties learning certain concepts, she explains that she ‘believes the ability to learn for most students is already there; all that is required is for someone to help bring that passion for learning out.”
With computers and connected devices continuing to shape our world, Thuy firmly believes that children should be introduced to the universal language of coding as early as possible. Within a decade, an inability to code will be just as debilitating as illiteracy and innumeracy is today.
