Restriction endonucleases, more commonly known as restriction enzymes, are a specific type of enzymes that hold the capability of cutting through a DNA molecule at a given location. Restriction enzymes currently are a core component of DNA recombinant technology and are used to scan a DNA molecule in order to search for specific sequences that commonly comprise six or four nucleotides. Upon locating the required DNA sequences, the restriction endonucleases products halt and begin to cut the strand, a process which is known at enzyme digestion. In the case of double stranded DNA sequences, the restriction endonucleases for the DNA can be done on both the strands. There are instances when the cuts can be blunt. Restriction endonucleases are generally segmented on the basis of types, into cofactor requirement, sequence specificity, cleavage position, and subunit composition. Type one restriction enzymes are generally complex and multisubunits. They cut DNA randomly and are usually far away from their common recognition sequences. Type two enzymes are able to cut DNA at locations within their recognition sequences or within a certain error limit.
