Baseload power demand in Canada is met through hydropower, thermal power from gas, and nuclear power. The importance of nuclear power is steadily declining, but that of gas-based thermal power generation is growing. Nuclear power generation is expected to decrease from 95,650 GWh in 2016 to 68,722 GWh by the year 2030 at a negative CAGR of 2.5% during the period 2017–2030. This is due to the decommissioning of some of the existing nuclear plants. No new nuclear reactors are expected to come online during the forecast period.

Large Hydro and Pumped Storage is the Dominant Source in the Canadian Power Mix

The cumulative installed capacity in Canada was estimated at 143.1 Gigawatts (GW) in 2016. Large hydro and pumped storage was expected to be the highest contributor, accounting for a share of 52.7% of the cumulative installed capacity, equivalent to 75,426 MW. Between 2006 and 2016, installed large hydro and pumped storage capacity increased at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 0.8%. It is followed by thermal and renewable sources with considerable amount of shares in the total installed capacity. Gas is the dominant power generation source among the thermal power technologies. Large hydro and pumped storage will continue to be the dominant source of power generation in the future. However, this share might decrease while the renewable sources are expected to witness a tremendous growth during the forecast period 2017–2030.
