AeroMACS - WiMAX Forum

AeroMACS - WiMAX Forum

This Alliance Promotes the Alignment with Industry Standards

The WiMAX Forum®, the leading nonprofit organization that certifies and promotes the compatibility and interoperability of broadband wireless products based upon IEEE Standard 802.16, is forming the AeroMACS Advisory Council (AAC) to provide oversight to the AeroMACS Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) program developed in accordance with industry standards.

The WiMAX Forum and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) will promote effective public-private dialogue consistent with the ICAO Policies and guidelines along with the principles of the UN Global Compact to provide strategic guidance and a thoughtful sounding board for Aeronautical Mobile Airport Communication System (AeroMACS) PKI program activities. This development is an essential component in offering AeroMACS PKI to the ecosystem so that airport surface data communications are secure and promote the overall safety and regularity of flight.

This alliance between the WiMAX Forum and ICAO that began in 2011 to progress the AeroMACS and the PKI program has been formalized this week during the GANIS/2-SANIS/1 Symposium at the ICAO Headquarter in Montreal. The WiMAX Forum Aviation Working Group (AWG) has completed the AeroMACS PKI Certificate Policy and Profile in cooperation with ICAO Aeronautical Communications Panel Working Groups. Moving forward, the AAC will provide guidance to the ecosystem and review requests and documents. As the AeroMACS Management Authority (MA), the WiMAX Forum, with the support of Eonti Inc. will implement and manage the AeroMACS PKI.

“We will fully leverage the ICAO’s invaluable expertise with the formation of the AAC,” said Declan Byrne, WiMAX Forum President. “With the support of ICAO, Eonti, and the ecosystem we are able to deliver effective PKI so that AeroMACS networks are secure.”

“ICAO is proud to support the WiMAX Forum’s aim of upgrading airport surface data communications,” commented ICAO Secretary General Dr. Fang Liu. “We will be coordinating further with it to better ensure DATACOM security and the safety and regularity of aircraft movements.”

About ICAO

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is a UN specialized agency, established by States in 1944 to manage the administration and governance of the Convention on International Civil Aviation (Chicago Convention). ICAO works with the Convention’s 192 Member States and industry groups to reach consensus on international civil aviation Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) and policies in support of a safe, efficient, secure, economically sustainable and environmentally responsible civil aviation sector. These SARPs and policies are used by ICAO Member States to ensure that their local civil aviation operations and regulations conform to global norms, which in turn permits more than 100,000 daily flights in aviation’s global network to operate safely and reliably in every region of the world. In addition to its core work resolving consensus-driven international SARPs and policies among its Member States and industry, and among many other priorities and programmes, ICAO also coordinates assistance and capacity building for States in support of numerous aviation development objectives; produces global plans to coordinate multilateral strategic progress for safety and air navigation; monitors and reports on numerous air transport sector performance metrics; and audits States’ civil aviation oversight capabilities in the areas of safety and security.
