Biodegradable polymers are the subcategory of the larger bioplastics sector. Conventional thermoplastics are neither bio-based nor biodegradable. Major bio-based biodegradable polymers include poly hydroxybutyrate, polyhydroxyalkanoates, and related copolymers such as polylactic acid starch based polymers and regenerated cellulose. On the commercial scale, petrochemical-based biodegradable polymers which include co-polyesters such as polybutylene succinate, polybutylene adipate terephthalate and polybutylene succinate adipate, polycaprolactone. In the last couple of years, the two most significant biodegradable polymers gain traction in the market were starch based polymers and poly lactic acid which accounting approximately one third of the market of total biodegradable polymer consumption. Along with this there are other biodegradable polymers which include co-polyesters such as polybutylene adipate terephthalate and polybutylene and many others.

The biodegradable polymer has a significant range of applications in agriculture, medicine and packaging. For medical application, biodegradable polymers are utilized in prevention of adhesive surgical sutures and in drug delivery systems. As well as for agriculture application, biodegradable polymers are used in agriculture mulches.
