Proposed changes to Maltese tax rules

11-17-2017 04:49 PM CET | Business, Economy, Finances, Banking & Insurance

Press release from: Papilio Services Limited

The Maltese government has published a bill following the issue of the Budget for 2018. Included in the bill is a number of proposed changes to the Maltese tax rules.

Remittance basis of taxation
Long-term residents and holders of permanent residence certificates/cards (in terms of the Status of Long-Term Residents (Third Country Nationals) Regulations and the Free Movement of European Union Nationals and their Family Members Order) are no longer able to use the remittance basis of taxation.

Minimum tax liability
Any person who is ordinarily resident in Malta, but not domiciled in Malta (and can still use the remittance basis of taxation without benefiting from a scheme establishing a minimum tax payable), deriving income of not less than €35,000 arising outside Malta (which is not received in Malta) shall be subject to a minimum tax liability in Malta of not less than €5,000 per annum.

The above could mean a change for persons who have settled in Malta, and we will follow the debate in Parliament and the eventual enactment of the law to see whether this will be introduced, and to what extent.

In the meantime, should you have any questions or queries about the above or any other residence or income tax matter, please do not hesitate to contact Thomas Jacobsen on for more information.
