Thompson & Knight Top Texas Firm on Diversity Scorecard

Thompson & Knight LLP is the top Texas-based law firm for diversity according to the Minority Law Journal’s 2009 Diversity Scorecard. The Firm ranked 53 out of 210 firms, climbing more than 30 spots since last year’s rankings.
“It is such an honor to receive recognition of our diversity efforts,” said Nichole Dotson-Olajuwon, Chief Diversity Officer. “Thompson & Knight knows the value of diversity and will continue to do all we can to reinforce and promote diversity in the legal profession and our communities.”
The Diversity Scorecard is an annual survey ranking the diversity of the nation’s largest and highest grossing law firms. The included firms were ranked in the National Law Journal’s NLJ 250, the American Lawyer’s Am Law 200, or both. In past years, the rankings were based on the percentage of minority attorneys within a firm. This year the Minority Law Journal adopted a new methodology to account for the importance of hiring and promoting minority attorneys to partnership ranks. The new ranking formula added the overall percentage of minority attorneys at the firm to the overall percentage of minority partners at the firm.

Thompson & Knight’s Global Diversity Committee implements and monitors all diversity-related efforts. The Committee focuses on activities aimed at maintaining a diverse work environment, increasing the pipeline of ethnically diverse individuals and women in the legal profession, and enhancing our communities’ diverse populations. Recent efforts and sponsorships include mentoring students from Houston’s High School for Law Enforcement & Criminal Justice and coaching them in preparation for the YMCA Youth and Government Program's appellate advocacy competition; continuing a formal attorney mentorship program; implementing a diversity and inclusion e-communication series aimed at increasing cultural awareness of ethnic holidays and days of observance; presenting panel discussions to diverse law student organizations on various topics of relative importance; and serving as panelists for the National Black Pre-Law Admissions & Preparation Conference.
