A polarization rotator is an ocular device that has the ability to rotate the polarization axis of a rectilinearly polarized light ray or beam into an angle of choice. These devices can be created on the basis of Faraday Effect, total internal reflection or on birefringence. Polarization rotators have found extensive uses in contemporary optics as laser beams are usually linearly polarized and rotating the polarization is necessary to meet the growing demand. Polarization rotators works on the principle of Optical activity, which occurs naturally to quartz crystal as well as other materials that show enantiomorphism properties. The phenomenon is triggered by crystal lattice structure of the material, which lacks mirror-like symmetry owing to the orientation of the helicoidal chains of SiO4. Based on chain rotation route, there is “left” and “right” quartz which rotates polarization counter-clockwise or clockwise correspondingly. Polarization rotators are usually c-cut so that the rotation of polarization take place independently of the components’ rotation around axis, thereby making the component alignment-insensitive.
