The Louvre Abu Dhabi is one of our era’s most ambitious museum projects. Vienna, for its part, represents proven expertise in the cultural field. Expertise that NOUS now has the opportunity to put to work in the Arab world. On November 11, 2017, the museum on Saadiyat Island, designed by star architect Jean Nouvel, will open its doors to the public, and for its digital knowledge transfer will rely on the know-how of the Austrian firm NOUS. In the context of a global call, NOUS, an international provider of (cultural) corporate digital solutions, was commissioned to develop and realize the digital strategy for the flagship museum project on the Arab peninsula. After a roughly two-year, co-creation process together with the Louvre Abu Dhabi’s museum team, available now is not only an in-house multimedia guide, which can be expanded in terms of scale and modules, but also a supplementary public app for smartphones and tablets. The guide, which acts as a quasi-compass for navigating through the Arab world’s first universal museum, includes six languages, among them: Mandarin, Russian, and Hindi. The main features comprise a participative-intuitive group tour mode as well as applications designed especially for children, an inclusive mode for the visually impaired, and a virtual map of the museum.

»The international showcase project is a further milestone for our firm. We want to be present where digital innovation takes place in the cultural realm – and by that, we mean globally.«
— Wolfgang Schreiner, CEO of NOUS

The Louvre Abu Dhabi sees itself as a space for cultures to gather, and is based on a 2007 governmental agreement between France and the United Arab Emirates. In addition to the permanent exhibition, the universal museum will also have a changing exhibition of loans from prestigious French collections. With the help of new forms of mediation and presentation, exhibits from different origins and various epochs will be woven into an art-historical narrative that takes visitors on a journey from the ancient world to the present.
